Any POP or IMAP account that doesn't require SSL encryption should
work. I know a number of people use .mac accounts (myself included)
because they also offer an alternate SMTP port for when the standard
SMTP port of 25 is blocked by an ISP.

Actually, Simon Bell's latest mail client is Mail V and he's
integrated SimpleMail's POP support into it:
