Since I was just recamending using Hypernewt as a possible solution for
GTD I thought that giving a few tips and tricks I have learned while
using Hypernewt.
First if you install Hypernewt and having a problem trying to get it to
run (you get a error every time you try). Then freeze Hypernewt and its
associated packages, restart your newt, do a full backup of your newt
and then restore just the notes soup. For some reason it would appear
that sometimes Hypernewt is picky about fragmentation. After you get it
installed though it works great.
Another thing I would like to mention. If you use extensions for the
built in Notepad, you should NOT run Hypernewt as a notepad replacement
(this option is in the preferences). Also some notes you have created
in such extensions won't be compatible (viewable) in Hypernewt. For
example if you are using Super Notepad and you have encrypted notes,
those will not be viewable in Hypernewt as they use a built in
stationary that is not in Hypernewt. Also if you create notes in
Hypernewt they may not be viewable in Super Notepad until you hit the
update button in Super Notepad's preferences. This also applies for
notes created in Super Notepad as they may not be viewable in Hypernewt
until you do a import function. Both packages do work along side each
other fine except for these issues. I don't know about other Note pad
extensions. But again as long as you don't replace the built in Notepad
with Hypernewt it should be ok as the extension will still be used in
the app it was designed for.
Here is another tip, use the Hypernewt button. It should be on by
default but if not you can turn it on (or off) in preferences. This
small button sits on your screen at all times (except when Hypernewt is
open) and gives instant access to the app with one tap. You can move it
around to a different position if you want. If you prefer to have
Hypernewt docked in the button bar, you certainly can. But if your bar
is full you still have the option to get to Hypernewt easily.
Finally you can file a note in both the normal Notepad folder system and
in Hypernewts system. Or any combination. This is handy if for some
reason you want to remove Hypernewt later on and still want some notes
to be in certain Notepad folders. Or if you are swapping back and forth
between Hypernewt and the Notepad (with perhaps the Super Notepad
extension).
The possibilities of organizing with Hypernewt are almost limitless.
For example you could be using CardMedia to catalog some of your
inventory. Lets say DVD's. However you want to be able to have many
more categories than Names will allow you to do. So you hyperlink your
DVD's and then you can organize them into various folders for each
category/folder and subfolders as much as you want.
The only limits is if you are using a app that Hypernewt does not have a
Hyperlink Manager for. In my case I wish someone could write one for
Life Balance. But thankfully all of the built in apps and several
popular 3rd party are included.
Oh one final note. If you don't use any extensions for the Notepad and
you use Moreinfo, then you should make Hypernewt replace the Notepad as
you will get better integration with Moreinfo.
