[NTLK] 120 os 2 modem direct to lombard os 9?

I have a hayes compatible zoom modem that i wish to
direct connect from the netwon 120 os 2 to a lombard
g3 under os9.

Okay that should be possible, right? I.e. there is no
telephone between either machine just the newton a
pcmcia card and then into the lombard's modem jack.

Or am I mistaken that a direct connection is in fact
not possible that way?
