Regarding your battery pack
clean all contacts on the battery and in the battery silo, I use a
pencil eraser.
If the battery doesn't display a bit of springiness as it is almost
fully inserted you may not be getting full contact with the neg.
terminal. fashion a hook and gently bend it.

If the battery was fully discharged it may take several attempts at
charging to get it started.

The pen alignment issue may be related to jaggies. Try using a thin
plastic card to remove any material that may be lodged between the
display and the case.
