This is really one of my pet peeves as well...
A good example is that here in the States, we have run out of telephone numbers so we have "overlays" that confuses thing considerably...so now you don't know if the number you're dialing is a log distance number or not...
Invariably, when you dial the number, and it turns out to be a long distance number, a recorded message comes on that proclaims that you must first dial a "1" before dialing this number...
  HUH?!
OK...if the system knows that I must first dial a "1", then why doesn't it just do it and leave me out of the equation? If it knows, then why make me start over from the beginning?
  Sheesh!

The UI specialist Alan Cooper (http://www.cooper.com/insights/books/)
wonders why computers constantly whine at us that they don't know
what to do when there is enough data to make the decisions (or at
least a good guess) as long as the problem is A. recognised and B.
understood.

The Newton almost always does what I want and expect it to without me
having to spell it out every time or have a whole set of irrelevant
options presented to me. The Mac can't even work out which printer I
want to use when all the clues are blatantly obvious - I just set
Page Setup to print the Epson so why are you bringing up options for
the LaserWriter in the Print dialog? Another one: I always use a
particular printer with a particular document, so why present me with
a different printer or one that is not even connected?

Never mind that we just had an incredibly cold winter in North America and huge record snowfalls across the continent. As Al Gore said to a bunch of us the other day, these record cold spells and record snowfalls are actually caused by global warming. To which Jerry York replied, "Jeez then I guess we better stop this global warming before we all f**king freeze to death, eh?"
