If Apple does come up with a successor to Newton that also competes
well with current Netbooks, it will surprise us for sure. Make no
mistake about it, the iPhone and iPod touch are computers in most
every sense of that term.
The weak point for iPhone / iPod touch and netbooks too for that
matter is volume text input. Yes, I saw the video of that girl who
sent 300 K text messages in one month but I'm just not that dextrous
and neither is most of the world's population. This is where I think
that we need to be surprised.
How to surprise us here is tough to predict without venturing into
scifi territory where a red pill will dislodge us from QWERTY and a
temple jack will translate subvocalization into machine readable text
in the font face of our choice. On the other hand, maybe everything
worth saying can be handled by Twitter. Thumbs might be quite
adequate there.
