[NTLK] CNET: Newton verses iPhone

Hi Mark

In comparative assessments of both devices it all depends on how you define the
goal posts. To me the Newton has way more utility because I use it for 3-4
hours of continuous use every day in my work life. The large screen and cursive
Handwriting Recognition system allow me to do that. It integrates well with
taking meeting notes, writing memos and drafting letters.

On the other hand, if you compare it over a broader range of uses then the
iPhone wins hands down on convenience as it is better adapted to work in a
modern environment. The Newton can do most things but it takes a bit of a dance
and even then its effectiveness is modest.

So for me the Newton is still the winner but if my interests were more focused
on GPS navigation, web surfing, game playing, mobile emailing and texting then
the iPhone would come out on top.

Cheers

Tony

I do miss handwriting recognition and wish there was a larger
keyboard, but the iphone is at least 5x the functionality in 1/3 the
size.

I also think that we will see a larger iPhone/Mac slate (given whom
Apple has been hiring and their recent trademark re-purchase of
"TabletMac") which will be all the "Newton 3" could've been and more.
