That may just be the main reason Newts never caught on. I remember
being somewhat baffled by the UI when I sat down with brand-new 2000
in the cafe a few doors up from Newton Source SF. More than an hour
and lotsa manual pages later I had mainly come to realize it was
gonna take a while to get up and running. (And I'm generally a quick
study.)

Price was a big motivator as new PBs were quite a bit more then*
(iBooks weren't yet born), and needed lots pricey SW to match Newt:
with zip for an IT budget I was motivated way more than most geeks.
(Newt SW also lots cheaper). Handheld size also a big plus. (Details
in PS).

*more than twice as much in real, inflation-adjusted terms

My 2000 took an initial investment of many days' learning/tweaking
curve (esp. HWR), and then many more days/weeks finding and
installing all the great add-ons that made it so reliable (especially
Richard Li's) and turned it into an incomparable productivity tool.

And it's hard to imagine life with Newt without this list! Absolutely
essential/crucial assistance/news/info.

Once I learned how much Newt did right outa the box in such
incomparably elegant, efficient one-tap integrated ways, laptops have
remained a bloated pokey klunky covered wagon compared to the
all-in-one oh-so-simple instant-on, go-anywhere Road Warrior Newt. (I
roll my eyes when clueless laptop owners use the RW term.)

E.g, every time I have to fax with 10.5.7 I cringe compared to 5-tap
faxes with Newt. Etc. ad nauseum.

Apple SW/HW fell years behind in 1998 never to catch up in way too many ways.

(Perhaps closest to Newt is Dock: it's like Button Bar plus StartBar.
I even use it some since I learned I can navigate it via keyboard.
(Did I mention before I hate mice/trackpads?))

PS
Newt's big-pocket size vs. laptops was huge plus as I have several
work sites and make house calls = tote lotsa gear. Newt was my only
computer for a couple years, and the main reason I then got a refurb
PB was to save trips to Kinko's to find and download latest Newt SW
and upgrades. (Newt browsers and dialup too slow/limited.)
