Woody,

Thanks for the suggestions, especially about the WEP not being set to
Hex. I did, indeed, have it set to character.

Well, I checked the SSID and it was correct. I then wired up my PB to
the Snow Airport to find the hex equivalent and amended the Lucent
setting to include it.

Together with my new Internet Setup:

Configuration: Manual
Card: Lucent WaveLAN/IEEE
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Local IP Address: 192.168.0.253 (ping showed this address was not used)
Gateway/Router Address: 192.168.0.1 (This is the IP address of my
Airport)
Primary DNS/Name Server Address: 192.168.0.1
Domain Name: <None>

(suggested by Morgan Aldridge)

I then redid all the tests: Courier, Mail V with both smtp.orange.es
and the numeric IP address (I used 62.37.237.90 which is indicated at
several sites, includinghttp://www.ip-adress.com/reverse_ip/
orange.es). In addition, as the Orange email is POP, I also tested
with an IMAP account at fastmail.fm.

All to no avail: the errors remained exactly as before.

So then I removed the WEP security completely from the Airport and
changed the Lucent card settings on the MP2100 (taking care to
restart, as I do after each change, just to be on the safe side).

Redid all the tests again and again exactly the same results.

Seems to me that at sixty years of age, I'm wasting a lot of time on
something paltry, so I think it is now time to call it a day. I have
two MP2100s in really quite excellent condition and numerous Newton
bits and pieces (including an unused 100 in its original packing with
all the booklets, pamphlets, stickers and videotape). Perhaps it's
time to get rid of it all and spend my time more profitably.

Thanks, everyone, for all your efforts in trying to get this WiFi
connection up and running. I love the Newton platform, but it's time
to let go, I fear.

David
