We could go with the Canadian term "First Nations" -- at least it
acknowledges that they had established themselves as a functioning society
before the Europeans invaded and colonized and bestowed "civilization" (?!)
on them.
Personally, I can't wait till we can make do with "humans". I know it's not
useful for making some of the more interesting distinctions of history and
customs and cultures, but it goes some way to sweeping away the early
portrayals -- and it would have avoided that whole discussion.
