Lurker here. I find it interesting that this topic comes around on this list about every 12 months. I am only a public school math teacher, not a programmer. But, prior to teaching, I was one of those dreaded software sales guys.
From my less than humble point of view, one side seems to sound very much like some of my students when they disagree with a rule and they are trying to justify their breaking of the rule by deflecting, rationalization and other methods. In their case, it is easy = the rule is the rule.
In this case, what is the law? Do we clearly know? I was under the impression that IP copyright did not have a statute of limitations and that the IP is owned by the author or authoring party (think company when employee writes said code) to dispense as desired.
Just my thoughts. Back to lurking.
