Two reasons IIRC,
the recharge circuit in the Newt reads the temp on the batt., so a lower temp allows the circuit to recharge a batt even though the voltage is usually too low.
the electrolyte in the battery crystallizes at lower temps., giving a lower temp starting point for the recharge cycle.
