My 800 MHz iBook G3 came with 10.2.8 and after a memory upgrade to 384 MB, was able to take 10.4.11, but it was much slower. 

If you're going to do it, definitely max out the memory and probably stick with 10.2 or 10.3.

I'd probably leave it at 9.2 unless you have a higher end g3 (800mhz?) I think the old iBooks could run 10.4 and they were G3's, but max the ram out!
