That's what we get for basing our national anthem on the somewhat
bawdy official song of The Anacreontic Society, an 18th century music
appreciation group. Even before Key's poetry was set to it, it was
known for being notoriously difficult to sing. The original has a
particularly fun chorus.
"And besides I'll instruct you, like me, to intwine
The Myrtle of Venus with Bacchus's Vine."
Now, just remember what part of a woman could be poetically called a
flower and what part of a man could be called a vine. Heh. Every now
and again I feel like breaking out in the original when the anthem is
being sung, but in the current political climate, it would likely get
me a ticket to Gitmo.
