Fortunately the risk of encountering a determined hacker is relatively
small.  I use Mac filtering and AFAIK have had no issues in the 6-7 years I
have had Wifi.

MAC filtering can be bypassed if you know what you are doing.  It does
keep out causual but not the determinated hacker.
