Perhaps if you switch between ink and handwriting recognition modes you might not need to switch between pen and stylus so much.

Another way to go is to use ink mode all the time and only allow the Newton to convert handwriting to text afterward.

It shows on page 130 for me… 

would be a great thing since I use my PDA at the university quite heavily. Switching between pen and stylus gets quite tedious during the first 2 classes already.
