You mentioned you are using a static IP address, are you also manually
setting your DNS servers? If setting DNS servers (which you should be
doing), are you setting the DNS to the IP of your AirPort or a public DNS
server (you might test both to rule out any potential issues with different
configurations)?

As for the Lucent/Orinoco Silver cards, they were older cards/firmware that
only support 40-bit encryption (as opposed to 128-bit for the Gold cards,
though the firmware can be upgraded), so there might be other differences
that would make it less compatible. Of course, I assume that you're using
no WEP encryption/password (an open network) on all of your AirPorts you've
tested with. If you're using WEP encryption, that would be why.

My Buffalo/Melco card supports 128-bit encryption, and I've used it with
WEP encryption on my 802.11b "snow" AirPort, but most WiFi access points
require a minimum of WPA encryption at this point.
