Nic, Noah, everybody,

Like you, and at Noah's request, I checked yesterday how we could connect to Marisa's NewtonCity mail server.
I discussed it yesterday with Marisa, who advises us for the moment to use only the online version (newtoncity.org:2000).
Like you, I noticed that we can use Citadel's mail service (the suite that allows the NewtonCity site to work) works correctly on our Macs (or PCs) with a mail software. As well as on our Newton for receiving emails, but not for sending emails. The reason why we can't send mail via the smpt.newtoncity.org service is because on Newton we can only use port 25 (smpt.newtoncity.org:25) which is unencrypted (Newtons don't support ssl or tsl). By default port 25 is disabled in Citadel for security reasons, to prevent the service from being bombarded by spiders. As a result the smtp service rejects us when we try to send an email. On our Mac/PC or even on our smartphones this is not a problem because it communicates on port 587 which is active on Citadel.
So unless Marisa gets her hands on the Citadel code and reconfigures the smtp service to open port 25, we won't be able to send mail with our Newtons via NewtonCity. But opening port 25 or not is not really difficult, the concern is that then we also have to manage the security of the site…

Personally I get around the problem by using the smtp service of my Internet provider (Orange here in France) which still allows the use of port 25 on its (smtp.orange.fr:25) with my Orange ID of course.
So in MailV I have in sending address:
myname at newtoncity.org
but as login myname at orange.fr (and the password of this Orange account) You have to check with your various providers if they allow you to use the port 25 of their smtp.

myname at newtoncity.org
