Forget the backup battery, the Newton runs perfectly well even if it is not
installed at all. My usual advice in these situations is:

1) Take out both main and backup batteries
2) Press the power switch and keep it pressed for a couple of seconds
3) Repeat 2) a couple of times
4) Press the switch again and wrangle something in between the switch and
the case so that the switch keeps being pressed.
5) Leave the MP alone overnight
6) Get whatever you wrangled in out again
7) Install the ac adapter or a fresh set of alkalines

Normally, the MP should boot automatically w/o being turned on. If it
doesn't,
you can try the hard reset again. If you still can't get it on, there
definitely
is a hardware problem.
