I was reading a bunch of stuff on that awful DMCA (Digital Millenium
Copyright Act) that some companies are using as a weapon. There was one
interesting thing, though. Seems there was a report from the Librarian of
Congress that was added to this law, explicitly stating exemptions. One of
these was that you're *allowed* to remove copy protection under certain
cases of abandonware! (they don't, of course, use the term abandonware)
Now, it appears this is intended for cases where, due to shifting
technology, you have copyrighted material on a medium that is no longer
supported, i.e., burn a CD from all your old 8-tracks, or circumvent copy
protection to copy stuff off that 8-inch floppy. I'm not sure how this
applies to us, but it might be worth a look. Alas, though, I foolishly
forgot to bookmark the page! I'm sure someone out there who is interested
will find it. If I happen to find it again I'll post it, if someone else
doesn't do it first.
