Hi Folks,
Yes, this is another beta of ATA Support. And no, this isn't the
final version yet (simply because there are still bugs in it :).
ATA Support is a software that lets you use ATA cards (Compact Flash
and compatible, full size ATA Cards, Sony Memory Stick - there are
some problems with Smart Medias apparently) in your Newton and
actually store data on them as on linear cards.
ATA Support can be downloaded from my website:
http://www.kallisys.com/newton/ata/
The 1.0b7 release expires on October, 8th.
This isn't the final version yet. Don't ask me if or when you can buy
the full version, the answer is once every known bug would have been
fixed. This means that you can help me by providing logs.
I'd like to thanks, in addition to all Newton users and developers
who helped me for development and appear in the about box, all beta
testers who helped me by sending me logs. Thanks a lot. Without your
help, I wouldn't have been able to fix for example the bug in the log
version on NewtonOS 2.0 (since I only have a MP2100).
What's new?
-----------
* The cards are now put to sleep if they're not used for a given time
(which you can set in the preferences)
* The bug of the log version under NewtonOS 2.0 has been fixed.
* The bug in the Set Auto Mount button has been fixed.
* The log can now be deleted by the regular version.
* Various improvements in the installer.
* I added more debug code (in the log version only) to detect and fix the
bugs I don't experience (see below). As usual, I need your help for those.
* The software now says 'CF or compatible' instead of CompactFlash when it
encounters cards which behaves like CompactFlash cards. Indeed, some users
reported that they had regular ATA PC-Cards which were said to be
CompactFlash cards while they hadn't the size of those. The log showed
that their firmware indeed said they were CF compatible hence the mistake.
Known bugs
----------
* Some users have reported that when there are some packages (such as
NetHopper) on an ATA store, bad things happen when the Newton goes to
sleep and this causes the system to restart.
I never experienced this which may have been fixed by the new
power-management code.
* Under some circumstances, the Newton is locked. This includes situations
when the 3Com's driver is installed or when one installs packages such as
NetHopper. I've been able to reproduce the latter, and the Newton loops
into a system function (TFrameRelocationGenerator::Update) for an unknown
reason.
* Some users reported a weird error when partitionning some ATA cards which
are nevertheless recognized by the driver. I never experienced it.
* Some users reported an abnormal slow transfer speed of some ATA cards.
Regards,
Paul
