Well actually, the same thing started happening with my RangeLAN2 card. But
I also found out that this only happens with Newt's Cape or applications that
use Newt's Cape (like Hemlock). Connecting with, say NPDS or MAD Max works
just fine. So I think there's some weirdness going on with my Newton or
with Newt's Cape, although I was discussing it with Steve Weyer and he was
skeptical about it being NS' fault. I'll have to rebuild my Newton one of
these days. That should be a few days' work :)

Maybe your ethernet card in the Newton cannot properly do the speed
negociation. To test this you could go from Newton to the hub and then
connect the hub to the switch. That would force the switch to 10MBps,
assuming you got an elder hub.
