I've not heard that specific story, but the second generation Range
Rovers (P38A... mid '90s to early 2000s, IIRC) are notoriously
problematic and that just about fits with the kind of stories I've
heard as to why to avoid them. I'm sure they can't all be that bad,
but they certainly built a reputation.
