Robert, the answer is very simple:

even if you are experienced in soldering SMD and if you have the right tools, it is really a hard work and some kind of hassle with the possible danger of damaging the Newt in the background.
Installing (and removing) the SER-001 is a piece of cake compared to that work and: the risk of damaging the Newt is much much less.
From an electrical engineers point of view the SER-001 is a real nice piece of hardware, adding a protection for yor serial connection.
All in all you can call it a professional solution.

But, the part that I never got, as far as I remember Marco bought a SER-001
as well, or am I wrong Marco ?
