        Seriously, though, why not start out with Newton Script
programming? The language is really nice, you've already got the
platform for it, and the development tools are free. Set him up with
"Programming for the Newton using Mac"
(http://home.cox.rr.com/nemesys/NewtSoft_EN.html), which is a really
good introduction to Newton programming and not very Mac-specific at
all. Unna (http://www.unna.org) has copies of all the dev tools, plus
all the documentation Apple released (Newton Script reference, Newton
Programmers Guide, etc).
