I know there are certain portions of Handspring's website that you can't get
into without the appropriate serial #...
Probably doesn't help much, but I suppose it's a plausible misuse

I have no idea. It just seems to me that asking for, let's say, the model
number, or when it was purchased would make more sense. I do know that when
one sets up an account, the service provider wants that information. And
like I said... this is more of a creepy feeling than anything based on
specific concerns. That's why I'm asking all of you smart folks on
NewtonTalk ;-) !
