Good information there...We at least know that the
machine is actually seeing the hardware...It's just
not seeing the OS. Now, I haven't messed with a Mac in
ages, so I may be off base here...but I seem to
remember that the system folder on Macs needing to be
"blessed". Does this still need to be on newer Mac
OS's? If so, you may have found that your drive no
longer is showing your system folder as THE system
folder. I believe that if you boot with the CDROM, you
may be able to fix that...(I don't rightly know how,
but you may be able to figure it out)
And! If you are replacing your existing HD with a new
one, you will have to boot with the CD anyway to
install the OS on it as well!
When you say you have your drive set to Cable
Select...is this correct (other Mac owners chime in
here) Cable Select is an archaic setting and most
computers do not use that setting any more, it is only
there for backwards compatibility to maintain the IDE
standards...I don't know if Apple is doing or not.
Here is how I would configure the system.
Bus-0: Master = original HD
Bus=0: Slave = CD Burner
Bus-1: Master = Second HD
Bus-1: Slave = Iomega Zip drive.
The reason for this is, I figure you are adding the
second drive becuase it is newer and bigger and will
eventually replace the original. You don't want to put
the CD and HD that you are transferring between on the
same bus. The reason for this is that the IDE bus can
only handle a single datapath (thus the advantage of
SCSI) This means that if you have your OS on the drive
that you are using for tansferring data to and from
your CD on, then something has to wait when a call is
made to the OS, usually it's the CD-R, hence; coaster!
Once you get your second drive setup the way you want,
you can just swap it out for the original one
(although, HD space is like money, you can never have
too much. I don't own a single machine with under
100GB storage on it) Heck, on the machine I am using
now, I have 12 seperate hard drives on it! But because
it's RAID and I'm running NT2000, it only looks like
two drives! Drive C: and drive F: (I do have a small
drive D:, but that's only 2gb for system tools)
Well, I hope something I said here helps, but since
I'm no longer activly involved with Macs, my knowledge
on the system is dated...
