Since Dr. C.J. uses virtual intern in his everyday work, I will defer to his
report on his use of it in medicine. I have been in healthcare for about 20
years in various settings, now a Director of Nursing. In my search for tools
to be rid of the dozens of slips of paper and post it notes and reference
books in clinical management and care, I have also arrived at the fact that
the Virtual Intern is the best Newt application out there in this area. It is
a great productivity and info capture tool for clinical management of
patients, see http://www.pdamed.com/newton/
It was re released as freeware by the developer after some bug fixes and some
committed people followed up a couple of years ago, I believe this was
chronicled on smaller.com

However, as time passes, I know it will be a foregone conclusion that I will
need to switch to another device and platform. The lack of current
clinical references (e.g., Lexi Drugs, 5Minute Consult, Taber's,
Labs,Harrison's) for the Newt that are available on palm and pocketpc
platforms
(and several of these references can be integrated/crosslinked) is a problem;
also many facilities are setting up wireless point of care and other IT
initiatives that will only work with these platforms as well. Definitely the
screen size and OS superiority is there in the Newton, but the reality of
staying in touch with current info and connectivity is there.

The most ironic thing I think is that with the release of Tablet PC, I hear so
many people touting this as an extremely significant development in the
vertical market of healthcare; to which I say, Newton was there years ago,
and with a better form factor. I know healthcare was one of Newton's vertical
markets, but the potential was not entirely tapped, and with the
emergence of IT in healthcare to the levels it is now showing, it appears the
timing was off as well. The thoughts of what could have been are
incredible...
