I believe the REV. A and B iMacs could have a serial port added. There
were several aftermarket serial ports offered. However, I'm not sure Mac OS
beyond 8.6 (it could have been earlier) will support this.
I first hear about it a couple of years ago when the techs at a Mac
store I frequented were all excited because they'd received one of these on
a trade. Apparently, if you knew your way around the iMac's guts, it was
pretty easy to add a serial port (something to do with the motherboard
having holdover ports from previous models that were abandoned in REV. C).
Anyway, their plan was to add a Gravis serial gamepad directly to the iMac
to make an iMac gaming console.
However, there was the issue of being stuck with a maximum OS under
which this would work.
