169.x.x.x is not a local loopback, it's actually a self-assigned IP as
the newt is unable to connect to the DHCP address. It's actually a
standard TCP/IP function (although it didn't show up in the MS TCP/IP
stack until Windows 2000). Do you have any other systems that you can
use to check DHCP coming from your X-system?
