In this particular case the error (-61001) is a Lantern Data Link
Layer Error meaning "driver not found" (eLANTERN_DriverNotFound).
I've been working on drivers for two other cards (an IBM and a
Linksys) and it *seems* that you get this error when there is a
partial mismatch of some sort. I.e. normally, if you have no driver
or a complete non-match you see this message:

"There is a problem with this card. (Newton cannot
         recognize this type of card.)"

In the case of my Linksys card it has a long name (32 letters) and
I've been using Paul Guyot's long-name hack (which I believe is also
being tested with some wavelan cards) when building the driver pkg to
try to get around this. His hack does allow me to get the package
installed but then I was getting this -61001 error.

Perhaps you could try using Paul's "Get Card Info" package to see what
the CIS data from the card looks like, in particular the product name
string though I'm not sure that would help unless someone knows how to
adjust the appropriate 3COM package. Is this card supposed to work?
Does anyone know if there are any driver differences are between the
3CCE589ET and 3CXE589ET? From 3com's info it seems like the only
difference is the port - one is a dongle the other an Xjack. But I
have no idea whether or not the these cards could share the same driver.

Can you add an Internet Setup for the card? What does it
show as a name in the card pick-list?

You install "Get Card Info" and then insert the card - tapping
"Get Card Info" (it'll be stored in Extensions) should prompt you
to copy information about the card into Notes which can then be
e-mailed or exported via NCU etc.
