It seems that you either don't authenticate at all or with a wrong password.
(you don't use a password when you send or connect to the internet, which is
why only receiving gives you a problem)

Go both in your Internet Setup and your Owner Info and (re)enter all of your
password(s) and make sure that the 'Enabled' checkbox for the SimpleMail
setup (upper left) is checked.
