I've been toying around with a dissected Newton keyboard and a variety
of specs & ideas in an attempt to make a simple touch-sensitive keyboard.
I feel that "cheap is the way to go", in that it would basically be a
big sticker that would adhere to the 2x00 lid and that the timing chip
& goodies would plug into the internal adapter. The "sticker" would be
two layer: one with the inter-weaving traces printed on it and one
on top of that with holes punched (where the fingers would touch to
complete the circuit). A microcontroller could negotiate between
the Newton and the keypad via the internal comm port (extra parts required
of course). It would be nice to use the existing chips, but Lexmark
was not amused during a dialogue I had with them.

Of course, I have long fingers and I hold my 2100 in my palm, and for
all I know most people may hold theirs with fingers touching the underside
(aka: lid). I'll try to throw some various project ideas up on the web
in case anyone has some good feedback.
