I don't know about 5 gig iPods, but my 10 gig is nearing the 18 month
mark and is running just fine. True the battery doesn't last quite as
long as it's used to, but still longer than the current 3G iPods. I
have no complaints.

PS - On a personal note, Apple's $99 battery replacement policy is way
too expensive. I like the $68 price tag better, but I think it should
be closer to $45. Although, for $60, the Belkin AA Battery pack is a
great deal. I hate rechargeables and would rather keep buying pack
after pack of AAs than have to worry about if I remembered to charge my
device's battery. Being able to switch between rechargeable and AA (or
what ever type) would be best.
