We have nicknames for just about every nationality on the planet, so I guess
it stuck. Sometimes used in a derogatory sense, sometimes in jest. Also
depends on how sensitive the person being called the name is eg. Americans
are commonly called Yanks, but from what I heard certain people from the
South don't like being referred to as a Yank (short for Yankee).
