I have a 1 gig microdrive, and it worked... ok.

Honestly at this point in time, understand I support development
on the Newton, and the ATA cards work in a pinch, but I currently find
ATA cards cool to have such large stores, but what is the point of more
than 40 mb when...

.... you use you most of the system heap memory reading the directory
after a while?
It takes FOREVER to uploading information to the cards.
And while such large stores are great for MP3's, since the MP3's
don't show on a directory, it would take WEEKS to fill up a 1 gig card
with the transfer rate of a desktop to Newton. And it is really
disappointing when one day the dard freezes and all that transfer time
is lost.

Needs to be a quicker way to get stuff into those cards. That
would be wonderful! But I'm patient.

Currently using my linear flash 32 mb card. ;)

Subject: [NTLK] CF Cards

Hi All

I was just wondering if other people are using large(ish) CF cards in
their Newts without problems. I have a 256Mb card (a generic one bought
from Expansys a few months ago) and I have had a few problems with its
reliability. I have tried it formatted as 4 partitions and after about
2 weeks of use the first partition comes up with a variety of errors
when trying to access packages - usually error -48022. The other
partitions seem ok but then they are not accessed as much. I have now
tried partitioning it as 2 and will see if I get the same issues.

I just wondered if experience indicates that the more or less
partitions options is better - you have the option of between 1 and 4.
Also are they specific brands of cards that work the best - speed,
reliability etc.. I have check the ATA pages but any other experiences
would be appreciated.

I am also looking for a larger linear card. Currently have a 4 Mb one
which is great but would really like a 32Mb one to use as a the main
memory store and then I can use the CF card as a back-up or for holding
books etc.. So if anyone has one for sale, let me know.

Regards

Dave
