I have a question for you - I'm not sure how to implement the data
acquisition of Software or Hardware. What I want to do is to collect very
specific information about revision numbers for both. This will potentially
help troubleshoot hardware/software issues. But the sheer magnitudes of the
hardware and software revision combinations are really extensive. Right now
I'm thinking that I'll have maybe 20 sets of fields for each Hardware and
Software with the set consisting of these fields: Hardware/Software -
Revision - Location (PKG & Data) - Type. There might be a need for
additional fields, but I'm drawing a blank?

i.e.:

Hardware Revision Location Type
SER-001 SE-1 94V-0 Internal Serial
Ambicom BT2000-CF Rev-03 1PCMCIA01 Bluetooth

                                                        Location
Software Revision PKG Data
Type
Blunt .05 1PCMCIA01
Communication
Blunt .04 Internal
Communication
shopList 2.3 2PCMCIA02 1PCMCIA3
Productivity\Home\Shopping
shopList 2.2 Internal Internal
Productivity\Home\Shopping
shopList 2.3 Internal 1PCMCIA3
Productivity\Home\Shopping

1PCMCIA01 = 1-the card slot / PCMCIA / 01 - is the card # (I have 6 cards
now)

In this example each heading would be a dropdown list with the appropriate
dependency field (Hardware/Revision), where the user would select the
desired value, displaying the result. Once the entire configuration is
decided you would then "save" the settings and then be presented with the
set configuration for that MP, it would also be added to the master db for
viewing with others as well as be included in the stats.

I'm also playing with the idea of linking the .pkg's for that MP in a
container grouped by Location or All for a configuration set. That way if
you botch your system, you can request a data set for your Newton, complete
with keys via download or the loaner program. Or alternately, you could
request "Victor's" setup, minus his keys of course. This would allow people
to quickly troubleshoot their system against a (theoretically) working
system. I'm thinking about how to do as much of this for free like a limit
of 2 meg per member and anything over that to have a nominal annual charge,
say $5-10 and then include more space that the member could also save data
to. I may have to enforce a traffic limit depending on how much traffic
actually happens?

Let me know what you think....

Hi Paul,
I posted a reply to your Newtontalk message regarding the bluetooth
hardware hack from 40hz.org. Apart from that I do not have any other
idea, newtonmp.com is a great idea anyaway! ;-)
