I don't see why the formation of a seperate division for the iPod should
be seen as a 'portent of doom' for either the ipod or the mac. An
accessory for the mac happened to be in the right place, at the right
time and has turned into nice little earner for Apple. So much so that's
it's become independent of the mac and deserving of attention in it's
own right. The iPod isn't the successor to the Mac (in the way the Mac
was the successor to the Apple 2), it's a completly different product
with a life of it's own.

I don't think Apple getting more into consumer electronics is something
to get that excited about - Apple have long had aspirations of getting
into CE - like the aborted games console mac, the PowerCD portable CD
drive/audio player, the TV mac, etc. The only thing new here is that
Apple finally have a successfull CE product. Which is a good thing.
