This might be because the Newton could not find any services. Can you
use sdptool on the Linux box to check which services are advertised?

That's one of my test setups, and I didn't do anything specific, just
added a serial port to the advertised services via sdptool and then let
rfcomm accept an incoming connection. Then, I let a PPP daemon use that
connection, e.g. running on /dev/rfcomm0
