>And its size? 'Hi Jon I see you've brought the brick into work today' is a regular comment! However I often have an hour long train journey, Glasgow to Edinburgh, and I've been sitting comfortably with the Newt on my knee, the handwriting recognition still works over the bumps in the track, and I'm getting things done! Never did that on the P910. UI like the Psion, but the screen was a bit too small. The weight, size and feel of the Newt, the size and clarity of its screen, are all very much positives in my book.
As I've pointed out to quite a few people, the Newton's larger size
is one of its most attractive features to me. You can't compose
longer texts in a meaningful way with much smaller screens
(have experience with the Atari Porfolio and the Palm IIIx and IIIc),
and the possibility to do things like letters and larger notes by HWR,
and to switch to keyboard input with even larger texts gives me
unparalleled flexibility. I just love the look and feel of the machine,
the fact, that it really handles like a notebook with its flip cover etc.
Listening to music on the Newt is of course an extra, a gimmick,
while listening to audio books is a smoother and more gratifying
experience, because the sound quality is more than sufficient for this
purpose. Since I don't own an MP3-player, the Newt's capabilities
in this respect came in handy. Not to mention the 20 to 25 hours
of battery time I get out of a set of fully loaded accumulators.
>And that will leave a gulf in the middle, where a tablet based keyboardless computer will evolve that will only be successful if its interface is elegant and intuitive. If it's a success it will look and feel VERY MUCH like the Newton!
A modern machine with an improved and enhanced Newton OS would
be a dream of course, but ...
>I hope Apple is listening.
... I'm not too optimistic about that.
Best,
Marcus
