John,

I think it has something to do with the Newt's recognition of battery
type. I had the same problem when doing exactly what you describe.
I now use a battery charge programme (Soft Charge I think it is but
there is more than one programme out there) that you can set for the
type of battery you have installed,. so that you get a more reliable
indication of charge available.
