Personally I use 2500mA NiMH cells in the battery cage - instant swap
out, long life, no stress on the battery charging circuits, no
waiting and low cost. The Uniross line of chargers and cells have
worked very well for me. Rotating two sets means I always have a set
ready to go. You can use a small package called Battery Type from
Logictools that adjusts the battery indicator when using different
cell types in the cage. The site has gone but the package will be
around somewhere.

Your Newton battery pack is so old now it's very unlikely to hold a
charge for any length of time. Certainly the capacity will be
irreversibly way down on what it would have been and any attempts to
charge it will display the whole charge/discharge life compressed
into a smaller, shorter cycle.

It is possible to build up the performance by cycles of full charge/
discharge but not by much at this stage. The Newt measures the
voltage to show the battery status and the temperature only to
prevent overcharging. The variation in readings might be a high
sensitivity to changing current demands of the Newton as the battery
cannot maintain its voltage properly.

Also the battery indicator is not updated in real time so it will
tend to jump between levels if the battery level is changing rapidly.

Frank, any other possibilities?

Joel.
