Please see my earlier post on the Extreme III by SanDisk. Most of my apps are on it and the Newton is very fast: no slow downs. The only way for one to tell is to try it out themselves. Please note: the Extreme III is a very fast card, and the Extreme IV is even faster.
So to reiterate, whatever they are in theory, my Newton is very quick and most everything is on the ATA card. I don't notice any slowdowns at all. I think most people just cheap out and buy slow cards... the Extreme III finally got low enough in price ($20) that I could justify it. If I were someone in the market, I would try and snag an Extreme IV on sale (~$40 for 1 GB). It has sequential read/write speeds of 45 mb/sec, over double the Extreme III. Most ATA cards are at about 8-12mb/sec without ESP, and as far as I know, they don't all do sequential read and write very well. This latter may be one of the problems with some of the cheaper cards...
