see my replies below, but also, if I do a restore through NCX, it won't restore the soup corruption, right?

Are you saying that, in someway, you are connecting to your Mac through
the serial port AND using TCP/IP via the serial port as well? Wow...
you might be pushing the limits for an eMate.
Not at the same time.

Is this a new (to you) eMate? Have you ever done a full erase and clean
installs?
I'll have to check my references to see if the "hard reset" that you're
talking referring to means to reset and erase the internal store
completely. If that's what you mean...
Then, yes. Over time, soups can get corrupted. This can happen from
installing apps, then deleting them, followed by more installing and
more removing. I would see symptoms typically during a backup or an
export. When the eMate tries to backup or export or read the corrupted
data in the soup, it can cause random disconnections, incomplete
transfers and errors at startup after a reset.
This is a new emate to me. I haven't done too much with it yet.

Works is in ROM, you will not lose the app after a full erase.
Cool.

Now that's impressive. You have (obviously) loaded some kind of serial
port extension on your eMate... Yes?
Normally, 38400 is the max connection speed for Newton serial ports
unless you go out of your way to modify the drivers and stuff at both
ends of the connection. I experimented with an extension or two that
allowed me to change the serial port speeds but, I never found these
options reliable.

I would actually recommend a full erase, to clean your eMate. The eMate
has very limited resources (heap, storage, speed, etc.) and anything
that upsets the balance can be tough to clean out... unless you have
the knowledge and experience to edit hidden and corrupted soups.

Ah... as I thought.

So, you've done this before? I really wouldn't recommend making these
kind of changes. Might create instability on an eMate.
