Could be due to fragmentation on your local store.  The only way to defrag is to
back up and then do a brainwipe.  Alternatively you could have slowly built up
more and more autoparts and other enhancements that are just filling up your
internal store.

With 300k left on the internal store you have less than 10% of the store left as
free space.  Could be time to shift something to the flash card.  Combined with
fragmentation this might explain it.

I've got a 2000, upgraded to 2100, with a 32 mb flashcard, 10 mb
free. 300K free on the internal store.

I've noticed a bit of a decline in the efficiency of my Newt in the
past few years - it was taking longer and longer to complete simple
tasks like converting handwriting to text, or letting me add an entry
to PocketMoney or MPG.
