I am trying to gather information on accoustic couplers (yes, you read
that right). I am planning a long distance backpacking trip and I would
like to be able to send/receive email now and then. I can do that with
the Newton (once I get a modem card, any recommendations?), but I expect
finding places to plug a modem in will be infrequent. How often do you
find a phone with an open RJ11 jack. Certainly not pay phones. The
solution I see is to use an accoustic coupler. I've found a few companies
that sell them. They all cost around $100.00 which seems expensive to me.
They're also all around 10 ounces which seems heavy to me (after all,
just how much can there be in an acccoustic coupler. A Sharp Telemail is
essentially just that with a screeen and keyboard and it weighs barely 8
ounces). Do any of you know where I might be able to find lighter weight
accoustic couplers that I could plug into the modem card's RJ11 jack?
Looks like TeleAdapt's Telefast Plus accoustic coupler is one of the more
commonly used ones these days.

ps- Don't suggest getting a Sharp TeleMail TM-20. I'll grant that my
experience with them is limited, but I found it rather hard to use the
keyboard on it. Also, the 4K limit on what you enter is kind of short. It
would probably be adequate for email, but I write detailed trip journal
entries that are certainly longer than 4K per day. I suppose if I cannot
find an accoustic coupler that is substantially lighter than a TeleMail I
would consider it, but it seems some how so redudnant.
