As a reply an excerpt from a message from Victor of a while back:

Ethernet cards can be used for two purposes: establishing an AppleTalk link
or a TCP/IP link. Appletalk is handled by routines within the 2.x ROMs.
TCP/IP is handled by Newton Internet Enabler (NIE). The two cross over in
only one way: they both require that the proper driver be installed for the
Ethernet card. Other than this, the two connections are *totally* seperate:
they share no code whatsoever.

Newtons with the "Voyager" chipset and OS 2.1 (MessagePad 2x00, eMate 300)
can use the full AppleTalk and TCP/IP functionality with an Ethernet card,
with either NIE 2.0 or NIE 1.1 (with some caveats - see below)

Newtons with OS 2.0 (MessagePad 120/2.0, MessagePad 130) can (= appear to be
able to) use an Ethernet card for AppleTalk functionality, but not for
TCP/IP.

* NIE 1.1 can be uses with an Ethernet card on an OS 2.1 devices by
providing some of the NIE 2.0 packages, in particular "Newton Devices"

Applications that use AppleTalk include the Newton Backup Utility and the
Newton Connection Utility for MacOS, and network printing functionality.
Applications that use NIE are all Internet or TCP/IP applications, including
web browsers, e-mail transports, news readers, and chat or instant messaging
clients.

BTW Victor, I just checked both the ethernet part of your site and the FAQ,
couldn't find any of this, any pointers ?
