I've recently played with this: http://www.penreader.com - but on a desktop running W2K and using a trackball. I got fairly good
results with that.

There are some bugs, such as it doesn't properly recognize spaces, so you have to use underlines, and some of the gestures are
different than what I'm used to on the Newt, but it's workable.

I bought it because I'm interested in getting the Casio Fiva slab. It's a full Win98 computer without a keyboard, so it's newt like
in some ways.

I suppose if there's enough interest, they might be willing to do an iPaq Linux version. :)
