O.K.
I see that there is a lot of talk here on this matter, and way too much
techno-bable about which protocols, travel over what kind of connection, what
is compatible with the Newton and such.
WHAT YOU REALLY WANT TO KNOW!!!!!!!!!
Right now I have my Newton 2100 connected via an 8 pin serial cable (Mac) to a
PowerComputing PowerBase 180 running OS 9,..
AND I AM SURFING THE WEB!
Get this. When initializing the connection, the Newtons connection slip reads
"Engaging the MacIP driver..."
-----------THE SETUP----------
( I don't know if this will work on 120s or 130s or not.)
1 Newton 2100
1 Mac desktop running OS 9
1 Cable modem
software on desktop for routing
[ I use Vicomsoft's Internet Gateway ( http://www.vicomsoft.com/ ), but
IPNetRouter ( http://www.sustworks.com/site/prod_ipr_overview.html ) should
work too]
On the Newton:
-----------------------
Newton Internet, NIE LocalTalk Module, NIE Modem & Serial and all other NIE
stuff.
Internet Setup setting I used = tap "New", "Generic Setup".
Connect using = LocalTalk, tap "Continue".
Configuration = MacIP Server
Zone = <Current AppleTalk Zone>, tap "Continue".
Primary DNS/Name Server Address = (see info from your own ISP)
Domain Name = (see info from your own ISP)
tap "Done"
On the Mac
--------------------------
Install Internet gateway
Use setup wizard to create 1 port for your connection to the internet (either
via modem, airport or ethernet)
Use setup wizard to create 1 port for a Serial MacIP Server.
I can go into this in more detail if anybody wants me to. Just email me off the
