Actually, I don't see why a person has to do one (quote the entire message) or the other (get the archive URL). Why not clip the original post to the relevant content and just reply to that portion. If it's our beloved off-topic, philosophical discussions, keep enough lines from the post you're responding to so that the reader can see which side you're on. I'm sure that none of us feel the need to read and reread the opposing view numerous times.

As far as referencing the huge message you intend to reply to, I don't see
any other alternative but to go to the archive to get the URL of the
message.
